How Often Should I Mow My Lawn in Western New York?

A well-maintained lawn is the foundation of a great-looking property. But mowing correctly in Western New York's climate requires more than just firing up the mower whenever the grass looks long.
Proper Mowing Height for WNY Lawns
Different grass types need different cutting heights:
- Kentucky Bluegrass: 2.5 to 3.5 inches
- Fine Fescue: 2 to 3 inches
- Perennial Ryegrass: 1.5 to 2.5 inches
Rule of thumb: Never cut more than one-third of the grass blade height at once. Cutting too short stresses the lawn and makes it vulnerable to drought and disease.
How Often Should You Mow in Western New York?
- Spring (May-June): Fast growth — mow every 5-7 days
- Summer (July-August): Growth slows in heat — mow every 7-10 days
- Fall (September-October): Growth resumes — mow every 5-7 days
- Final cut: Late October/early November, slightly shorter than summer height
Professional Mowing Benefits
- Consistent schedule — your lawn never gets overgrown
- Sharp blades — dull blades tear grass, creating brown tips and disease entry points
- Proper edging — clean lines along driveways, walkways, and beds
- Clipping management — we can mulch, bag, or side-discharge based on your preference
- Time savings — reclaim your weekends
