What to Know Before Installing Tile in Your Western New York Home

Tile is one of the most durable, water-resistant finishes you can put in a Western New York home — perfect for bathrooms, kitchens, entryways, and laundry rooms. But a tile job is only as good as the prep underneath it.
What Tile Installation Involves
- 1Surface Prep: We inspect, clean, and level the subfloor or wall. Uneven surfaces cause cracked tiles and failed grout.
- 2Underlayment: For floors we install cement backer board or uncoupling membrane; for walls and showers, waterproof backer.
- 3Layout & Dry Fit: We plan the layout so cuts land in the least visible spots and patterns line up.
- 4Setting the Tile: Thinset mortar, proper trowel notch size, and consistent pressure keep tiles flat and bonded.
- 5Grouting: After the thinset cures, we apply grout, clean the haze, and seal where appropriate.
- 6Finishing: Caulk corners and transitions with flexible sealant to prevent cracking.
Common DIY Mistakes
- Skipping floor prep — tile over an uneven subfloor cracks and pops loose
- Wrong thinset for the tile — natural stone and large-format tile need specific mortars
- No waterproofing in showers — leads to rot and mold behind the wall
- Grouting too soon — thinset needs to cure before grout goes in
Where We Install Tile
